17/04/2002 The 2002 Budget

· Freeze on road tax · Freeze on petrol duty

Motorists breathed a sigh of relief on Wednesday 17th April 2002 after car tax and fuel duty remained the same in this year's Budget.

Chancellor Gordon Brown used his 2002 Budget to get more drivers to improve their 'green' credentials further by actually cutting car tax on the least polluting vehicles and knocking 20p off the duty on bio-fuels.

In a move that will please the UK's haulage operators, foreign lorries will have to pay tax to use our road network thanks to satellite tracking technology that should be up and running by 2004. Previously, UK trucks had to pay to go abroad, while European lorry drivers came here for free.
