£7.4bn road repairs outstanding in UK |

The condition of the UK's roads is deteriorating. The backlog of repairs is getting worse, according to the results of a survey by the Institution of Civil Engineers. Local authorities estimate it will cost at least £7.4bn to complete all the outstanding work - the equivalent of £120.00 per UK resident. A total of £5.5bn needs to be spent on carriageways, with £1.1bn needed for streetlight work, £600m for footways and £200m for other maintenance, it said. British roads are increasingly potholed and ill-maintained and action is urgently needed. The figure compares with last year's backlog estimate of £4.7bn. The institution surveyed local authorities in England, Scotland and Wales, which are responsible for all roads except trunk roads and motorways. The survey found that the worsening condition of roads had caused the number of highway liability claims to rocket. More than half of local authorities reported a more than 10% rise in such claims over the last 12 months, and nearly a quarter were now spending more than 10% of their highway budget on claims. Brackley resident's have been complaining about the number of potholes in the town. Manor Road and Halse Road have recently been repaired but one of the worst roads in Brackley is Valley Road with a pothole every few yards ! |
