Help for Sleepy drivers |
|
|
Australian transportation authorities have put up drawings of giraffes and cheetahs by the side of roads to combat driver fatigue. Officials in Victoria say that tiredness is the number one killer on rural roads. Kevin Fox of Vicroads which manages the state's roads says he hopes the drawings will make journeys more interesting. The drawings are on large screens along the road near the Werribee Zoo, 30 kilometres from Melbourne. The roadside has also been landscaped to include African flowers. The Department of Human Sciences at the Loughborough Sleep Research Centre offer advice and information about drivers falling asleep while at the wheel. For UK drivers planning to travel and drive in Australia an International Driver's Permit is not a legal requirement but if you want to hire a rental car some rental companies may ask for an International Driver's Permit. If you have been granted Permanent Residency for Australia normally you would be able to drive for three months only on your overseas licence. Regulations may vary from state to state, you should contact the local road transport authority on arrival for details on obtaining a local licence. to visit & drive in Australia visit the Australian High Commission (UK) site (below)
